How do I update Butter Bot controller's software?

Written by Emil Gajšak

Just like Butter Bot, its controller runs its own software (firmware), and we update it from time to time with fixes and improvements. You do the update in your web browser, so there's nothing to install.

Updating Butter Bot too? Start with How do I update Butter Bot's software?, then come back here for the controller.

What you'll need

A computer running:

  • Windows

  • Mac

  • or Linux

and one of these web browsers:

  • Google Chrome

  • Microsoft Edge

  • Opera

You'll also need a USB-C cable that can carry data, not just power.

The update doesn't work from tablets (like an iPad) or phones (iPhone or Android).

Before you start

  1. Switch the controller on.

  2. Connect the controller to your computer with a USB-C cable.

While the device is switched OFF, you can still power it through the USB-C cable. That way you don't have to exhaust your batteries while coding.

Updating the controller

  1. Go to code.circuitmess.com.

  2. Click the Restore Firmware button in the top-right corner.

  3. Choose Butter Bot Controller as your device, then click Restore Firmware.

  4. Click Connect and pick the controller's port. It's usually the only one in the list.

  5. Wait while it updates. It takes a few minutes, so don't unplug the controller until it's finished.

  6. When the update is done, the controller will re-start with the new firmware.

That's it, the controller is up to date! Unplug it, switch on Butter Bot nearby, and they'll pair on their own, like always.

Troubleshooting

  • No port shows up after clicking Connect: try another USB-C cable (some only carry power) or another USB port. In case your batteries are low or missing, you can switch it off, then connect to USB as a power source.

  • I picked Butter Bot instead of the controller by mistake: close the window, refresh the page and start again from step 2, this time choosing the controller.

  • The update stopped halfway: keep the controller plugged in, refresh the page and start again from step 2.
