How to update Butter Bot's software

E
Written by Emil Gajšak

Every now and then we release new firmware for Butter Bot (the software that runs on the robot itself). Updates fix bugs, make the sensors more reliable and keep Butter Bot running smoothly. You do the update in your web browser, so there's nothing to install.

What you'll need

A computer running:

  • Windows

  • Mac

  • or Linux

and one of these web browsers:

  • Google Chrome

  • Microsoft Edge

  • Opera

You'll also need a USB cable that can carry data, not just power.

The update doesn't work from tablets (like an iPad) or phones (iPhone or Android).

Heads-up: If you've written your own code for Butter Bot, the update replaces it with Butter Bot's original software. Save your work first.

Before you start

  1. Turn Butter Bot on.

  2. Connect Butter Bot to your computer with a USB cable.

Updating the software

  1. Go to code.circuitmess.com.

  2. Click the Restore Firmware button in the top-right corner.

  3. Choose Butter Bot as your device, then click Restore Firmware.

  4. Click Connect and pick your device's port. It's usually the only one in the list.

  5. Now wait. The update takes a few minutes, so be patient and don't unplug Butter Bot until it's finished.

  6. When the update is done, Butter Bot shuts down. Hold the power button for 3 seconds to turn it back on.

That's it, Butter Bot is up to date! Put it down on a flat surface, give it a command and off it goes.

Troubleshooting

  • No port shows up after clicking Connect: try another USB cable (some only carry power) or another USB port. Make sure Butter Bot is turned on.

  • The update stopped halfway: keep Butter Bot plugged in, refresh the page and start again from step 2.
