What is Jay-D 2.0?
Jay-D 2.0 is a DJ mixtable you build yourself. You assemble the electronic components, including the jog wheels, volume controls and sound effect buttons, and end up with a working mixer you can play music on. It is designed for beginners.
What will I learn by building Jay-D 2.0?
How digital sound gets from a file to a speaker. The build covers digital-to-analogue converters, amplifiers and speakers, and how the controls on a mixtable act on a track. Once it is assembled you can also code it in CircuitBlocks, which writes MicroPython for every CircuitMess device.
What age range is Jay-D 2.0 suitable for?
Ages 9 and up. The build uses some small components and the DJ concepts are a little more advanced than in our younger kits. A younger child can still enjoy building it alongside an adult, with an adult supervising.
Do I need any prior experience to build it?
No. The kit is designed for people who have never built electronics before, and it comes with step-by-step instructions and every component you need.
How long does it take to build?
About an hour and a half.
What can I do with it once it is built?
Jay-D 2.0 works as a DJ mixtable: the two jog wheels control playback and scratching, the crossfader moves between tracks, and the buttons cue up and trigger sound effects. It plays the music that comes preloaded on its micro SD card, and you can add your own.
How do I put my own music on it?
Through the micro SD card. Jay-D 2.0 plays mono AAC files at 24 kHz from a FAT32 card. Its USB port is a serial connection used for firmware and coding, so music cannot be transferred over it.
